Not Your Typical: Break The Curse of Perfectionism and offer Your Best

Bless up from your feet to your head top

As I release my book and reflect on the 200 articles I’ve wrote this year I think back to the paralysing thoughts I would have as a young artist. The thoughts of perfectionism and my lack of belief in a product. I see how far I’ve come with my most recent iteration of my philosophy Grinding and Hacking — it has nothing to do with perfectionism even in more recent times I’ve not spoke about doing the perfect piece of art I talk about working to your highest level. And part of elite mentality and being a high performer is just that.

Do Your Best at the Level You’re at

It derives from knowing that you are indeed good enough and the level of work you’re doing is great and it’s to a substantial level where you understand what makes a piece of work great under your lens, don’t work to the level you see out there work to the best level you know you have in this moment and because you have it your all etch that into society and show it off because no matter what anyone says you should be proud of what you done for you. This way you can have the position to look back at what you gave the world in finished work and not what you gave yourself in the headache of perfectionism.

Break away from Perfectionism

You see I was a serial perfectionist. Then I was a minimal effort guy when it came to producing. I didn’t care about putting out work or my own personal success (for many reasons) but when I decided I wanted to live great and produce great work, I started putting out work with my best efforts.

That brings me today where I have indeed tried my best out my best efforts out there in totality with all my skills from creating to promoting & aesthetics of campaign I have marked what my level is today.

I’ve left very little on the table in terms of quality and quantity so now it’s time to carry that level on at least, draw in more people and make more great things because I can. It’s my obligation and duty and I am very dedicated to the pursuit of this.

I’m here today as a man who has a book and a website full of theories and thesis’, a catalogue made for longevity and not immediate gratification as that’s what my principles call for.

I’m here for more

I hope you get that.

NYTYPICAL: Grinding and Hacking — Peak Performance of Moving Pieces #PrimeNYT

Bless up from your feet to your head top

We go again

I am sitting here, it’s 6am and I haven’t slept. I am toiling away at my next big campaign I’ve got to get done for black history month and find myself in a bind. Stuck between the ideal ‘if you can get it done now don’t wait till tomorrow’ & ‘don’t steal from your future self.’…

I am wondering how much sleep am I stealing from my future self who has to get a podcast done and how much of the work that needs to get done should I do now so I feel comfortable to go to bed? And is it even reasonable to be up at this time and will I be giving 100% although I got struck with a concept at this time I want to execute and not lose the spark to do it.

The point is dealing with the things you’ve got in front of you as they need to be done. I have given it to myself, yes. I’m going to lose a lot of sleep, yes it’s for a just cause and yes I’m okay with it.

That being said what can I give to you all right now. Is my understanding of Grinding and hacking,

Hacking

This is the understand of task managing and project execution. It’s my big boy idea of scope and point execution. Hacking would be considered doing a blog like this

It’s about giving yourself those points of reference to complete something to help your business move so you hack away at those big monthly and yearly goals with force and speed.

The point isn’t just about order of magnitude, to me most tasks demand the same urgency. This is about actionable items that would put money in your pocket or expand your base. The point is to have done all your big concepts so you alleviate the pressure of performance.

When you hack away at big concepts by chopping off a steak like substance or cutting a log of wood like a lumberjack you can move on to the more finesse type jobs.

Grinding

This is where we get grinding the menial day to day minutia. This is just as important as hacking away at a big idea this is format and creating structure as well as admin and dissemination. Real labour of love work.

Grinding is something like doing the cover art for a blog like this, rereading the article posting it at the right time and sharing it on all social platforms so people see it as well as doing the copy. All massive jobs, without the hacking I’d be unable to perform at this level.

Once you have things like the big concept sorted the presentation is everything. I will use all my skill to present any blog article that I do right. Curating my content is so important. Much again like the lumberjack, once you cut down the tree you have to remove the bark and if you want to make paper you have to transport it to the mill. Grinding

Grinding is meant to be day by day while hacking should be a bi weekly or monthly thing structured in a way that proposes synergy and order. You give each type a purpose and you can create a workflow best suited to you as to know you’re not scrambling. What you want is the ability to create order and streamline your process it’s not about the individual pieces but how they serve the whole when you remove order of magnitude you introduce performance pieces where each moving part has a purpose.

I hope you get that.

Spring of the Rookie: Samuel Ross and A-Cold-Wall* 50 Shades of Concrete

Spring of The Rookie We go again,

Samuel Ross is a name you’ll hear in circles that are in circles that are in circles with a guy that is about his business.

As the premier black fashion designer in London who actually designs, which I gave not to in my Techwear intro blog.

PNG image 2.png

What he’s gave black art is yet to be of high note but as I said his audience is niche, they’re direct, he communicates with us and happy to see him do what he’s doing.

He’s worked with the likes of Kanye and for Virgil I believe and had his start with A Cold Wall* in 2014 to not get my dates confused. How I heard of him was a really odd way, don’t feel to write about it (that’s how odd it was) alas.

He’s on my radar working and that show in 2018 For SS19 the imagery was striking and I couldn’t look away and immediately said he’s more creative than most.

When I hear of his background I wonder why his merchandising volume isn’t larger he does however have 3 pairs of Nike’s under his belt all carrying the same aesthetic.

This is where he and I collide, I love finding that thing that can attract me to the person and finding they’re more than just a money maker, he communicates using a philosophy.

image1.jpg

As many may understand it’s not easy to do because you have to live that way also and make it an ethos.

He uses artistic sense and a history knowledge of brutalist art and architecture mashing that with how he see the world and creates clothes using textures that are uncommon but perpetuate the feel of the philosophy activating the senses and allowing one to be engulfed by said philosophy

Brutalism polymers roughcast, concrete, sandbox, philosophy, London, subculture. It is in these things that make A Cold Wall what it is.
